"Have you guys go to MCD last night?"
"No? Why? Are they introducing new menu or toys?"
"Aiya, not that McD, but the Malaysian Cultural Day lar!!!"
Malaysian Cultural Day is an
annual cultural event organized by Persatuan Sains Farmasi and was carried out at Cahaya Complex (KOMCA) of the main campus of Universiti Sains
Malaysia on 19th October 2013 (Saturday). 62 young and enthusiastic pharmacy students were
actively involved as committee members to organize this event. And the event itself was
opened to be participated by all USM students in order to understand our rich and unique culture. The total amount of visitors
and participants of this event was estimated at around 250 people.
The whole event is divided
into three main sessions:
- Cultural Exhibition (4:00pm – 7:00pm)
The entry for this
exhibition was free. Everyone in the campus were welcome to visit this
exhibition. Many amazing culture-related mini games were conducted by the
department of activities and many interesting small prizes were prepared for
the visitors who won those mini games. Besides mini games, some traditional
food such as ‘tang yuan’ and Chinese
rice dumpling were also prepared by the department of food. Those traditional
food are free to be tasted by all visitors. The most exciting attraction of
this cultural exhibition was the voting booth of the 10 photos which were
successfully selected into the final stage of the Malaysian Cultural Day Photo
Contest. The top three photo owners were awarded with cash prizes during the
cultural performance at night.
- Dinner hour (7:00pm
– 8:00pm)
The dinner was served as
buffet style. All the audiences of the cultural performance were invited to
enjoy this dinner before the performance. Great variety of food was prepared to
impress the taste buds of everyone. Tolerance and respect among different
religions was embodied through the preparation of many vegetarian food for all
the vegetarian guests.
- Cultural Performance (8:00pm – 10:30pm)
Malaysian Cultural Day event
was brought to the highest climax when it proceeded into the best part of the
day: the Cultural Peformance! The performance was officiated by the VIPs, Dr. Nurzalina Abdul Karim
Khan, Dr. Vikneswaran a/l Murugaiyah, Dr.Hassaan Anwer Rathore, Mr. Selvamani
a/l Narayan Nair and Ms. Jelfariny Mohd. Jelahni. The performance on that night includes: multicultural dance presented by Adikarma (a well-known traditional dance group
of USM), Chinese traditional fan
dance by dancers from Chinese Association of USM, poem recitation, Indian dance, wayang kulit, pantang larang sketch and the unique Saban song presentation. For your information, the poem recitation, Indian dance, wayang kulit, sketch and song presentation are all prepared by the talented USM pharmacy student. The event was ended at about
11pm.
The main concept of this
multicultural based event is to reveal the uniqueness and colorfulness of
Malaysian multiracial and multicultural background to the general public in USM
main campus. With this concept, this event was expected to achieve a primary
goal that the great diversity of Malaysian culture can be highly appreciated and
hence the relationship between difference ethnics can also be strongly
enhanced. This event has also successfully provided a platform to build and
strengthen the ‘chemical bonds’ between students, lecturers and staffs of the
School of Pharmaceutical Science, USM.
